Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Who are The Cumbria Counselling Group?

We are a group of experienced counselling and psychotherapy practitioners who live and work in different parts of Cumbria and North West Lancashire.

What does The Cumbria Counselling Group do?

The Cumbria Counselling Group offers counselling, psychotherapy, life coaching and personal development to individuals, couples and groups. We also give advice and training to private and public organisations, companies, and health and educational services.

What is counselling?

Counselling provides a safe, confidential and productive way for an individual to explore a problem in their life – and to find a solution.

How do I know that counselling will work for me?

You can check this out with us over the phone or by making an appointment. Talking to someone confidentially who is not a friend or family member can sometimes make all the difference.

I acknowledge my predicament, but I remain unsure about asking for help. Can I talk to you confidentially before making a decision about my future?

Yes, of course. It’s always good to explore and clarify your goals.

How often will we meet?

The counsellor assigned to you will meet with you regularly, usually once a week and always at a time agreeable to you.

Will I have to talk about anything I don’t want to?

Absolutely not!

Can I arrange only one session so that I can assess whether this is for me?

Yes. This is actually what we invariably recommend.

How many sessions will I need?

It’s up you. We will help for only as long as you want us to.

Is your Counselling and Psychotherapy totally confidential?

Yes, for life! However, in the extreme circumstance of high risk of harm to self or others (and only with your knowledge), our confidentiality policy may need to be compromised.

How quickly will I be able to talk to someone?

We aim to return a call within 8 hours.

Does The Cumbria Counselling Group have a waiting list?

We can often offer an initial appointment within a few days.

How much will this cost me?

Please refer to our Fee structure. However if you are affected by a gambling problem, our service is free of charge

Will I have to pay if I miss an appointment?

You will only be charged if you cancel without giving 24-hours notice.

Is there a professional watchdog?

All The Cumbria Counselling Group therapists are members of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy)

What is Psychotherapy?

Counselling alone is sometimes not enough to change the course of our lives in a permanent and significant way. Therefore, in order to work at a deeper level, all members of The Cumbria Counselling Group are qualified practitioners in psychotherapy.

What is Transactional Analysis?

Transactional Analysis is a model of personality that can help explain our emotions, thoughts and behaviour – and make changes if we want to.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a type of counselling. The Cumbria Counselling Group therapists use some of the core techniques of CBT at the counselling level.

Testimonials

"After 9 years of trying to stop myself from gambling with no professional help I finally took the step of contacting GamCare and arranged the first of 8 one-on-one meetings. This was truly the turning point in my long battle with gambling, Just being able to talk to someone outside my own situation who would not judge me for anything I had done was such a relief.

With their great ideas and advice on how to deal with everything, TCCG made me realise I DID NOT NEED gambling in my life.

Horses had been my source of gambling every single day of my life for the last nine years, but it has now been FOUR MONTHS SINCE I LAST looked at horse racing - let alone lost money betting on them - and I can't thank my TCCG advisor and GamCare enough for the difference they have made to my life."

My Son’s Gambling Addiction
“I was introduced to Gamcare when my son's gambling came to a head. Without Sean I do not know how I would have coped. Being able to talk openly to someone has helped me deal with the very serious situation my son brought upon me with his gambling addiction.

It is very comforting that if you feel anxious about the situation, you can pick up the phone. I am very grateful for all the help I have been given, and if in the future I need any help I would not hesitate in contacting TCCG through Gamcare”.
